MEET THE FOUNDER
As a student of fashion design at NIFT Delhi, Rashmi Chowdhary developed her unique fashion language in 1991 exploring innovative uses of traditional craftsmanship and won the final award for the same. A commitment to craft inclusion lays the foundation to her process of design as she believes no committed Indian designer can remove this heritage from their design philosophy
Rashmi Maskara Chowdhary, an alumnus of Nift Delhi 1991, started Sari Ki Almari in 2017 to help the weavers find a place in the competing markets of machine made and synthetic apparel.
it was her observation that while the traditional Sari was losing its presence, a niche was being formed with people who saw the sari as a garment not of bondage but as a freedom of expression and compassion towards the heritage and the helplessness of the craftsperson.
Rashmi, an experienced fashion designer with a diploma from National Institute of Fashion Technology from way back in 1991, felt a need for affordable sustainability for the aware women of society . She started her collection of saris sourced from weavers from all over India and aptly named it ‘Sari Ki Almari’, a name one falls in love with as also with the carefully curated milieu of her saris.
West Bengal textiles amongst others like elegant Chanderis from Madhya Pradesh and Banarasi saris are part of the collections at Sari ki Almari.
Apart from her own designs she also selects from the designs from the weavers to give them a boost and a sense of pride.
'It is time we acknowledged the craft and skill of the weavers who pour their hearts into each sari they painstakingly weave with their artful hands.'
